About Dyfi National Nature Reserve

Dyfi National Nature Reserve is located on the west coast of Wales, encompassing a variety of habitats including salt marshes, mudflats, sand dunes, freshwater marshes, and ancient oak woodlands. The reserve spans the Dyfi Estuary, where the river meets the sea, creating a vital environment for migratory birds, wildfowl, and rare plant species. It is internationally recognized for its ecological importance and serves as a haven for otters, red kites, and a range of wading birds such as oystercatchers and curlews. Historically, this area has witnessed centuries of human interaction, from medieval drovers using ancient drove roads to present-day conservation efforts. Recreation opportunities include walking through marked trails that reveal various ecosystems, birdwatching from hides overlooking the estuary, and exploring the woodlands that support ancient trees and diverse flora. Notable landmarks within the reserve include the Hafren Forest and Cors Fochno, one of the largest raised bogs in Wales, both contributing to the reserve’s unique landscape. Visitors are drawn to the reserve for its peaceful natural beauty, educational walks, and opportunities to observe rare species in a protected setting.
